What does the word "vitamin" mean?

Vitamins can be described as organic compounds found in food. Vitamins allow us to absorb nutrients from food. The body cannot make vitamins; therefore, they must be obtained from food.

There are two types of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water easily. These include vitamin C (thiamine), Vitamin B1 (riboflavin), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), Vitamin C, B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). The liver and fatty tissues are home to fat-soluble vitamins. Some examples include vitamin D and E, K, A and beta carotene.

Vitamins can be classified according to biological activity. There are eight major groups of vitamins:

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins varies depending on age, gender, and physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets the RDA values.

For adults 19 years and over, the RDA of vitamin A is 400mg per day. Pregnant mothers need 600 micrograms per days because it is vital for the development and growth of their baby. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants below one year old require 700mg per day. But, between 9 months to 12 months, the amount drops to 500mg per day.

Children between the ages of 1-18 need 800 micrograms per daily for obesity, while children overweight require 1000 micrograms. Children underweight or obese will need 1200 mg per day.

Children aged 4-8 years old who have been diagnosed as having anemia require 2200 micrograms of vitamin C per day.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

Adults over 70 need 1500 micrograms daily, as they lose 10% of their muscle every ten years.

Women who are pregnant or nursing need more than the RDA. Pregnant mothers need 4000 micrograms per daily during pregnancy and 2500 after giving birth. Breastfeeding moms need 5000 micrograms each day when breastmilk production occurs.
